Which boilies in autumn? Choice of bait based on water temperature

Autumn is the best carp window of the year - but it is not one season, but three. Between 18 and 6 degrees water temperature, the carp's metabolism changes so much that the same bait can be a sure-fire success in September and a non-starter in November. If you catch consistently in the fall, you don't base your choice of bait on the calendar, but rather on the thermometer.

Phase 1: 18 to 14 degrees – eat what you can fit in

In this phase, the fish create targeted reserves. The metabolism is still at summer levels, but the natural food in the water is becoming scarcer. This is exactly why the food introduced has a stronger effect now than in midsummer.

Nutrient-rich fishmeal and crustacean boilies are now the right amount. A Squid Insect Based on LT fish meal with squid meal, artemia and crustacea, it delivers exactly the profile that carp are looking for in the pre-winter. For long-term places and large quantities of feed, it is Monster crab food boilie the cheaper choice without sacrificing quality.

Amount of food: 2 to 5 kg per place per night is not an exaggeration at this stage if the place is accepted. It's better to build one place consistently than three half-heartedly.

Phase 2: 14 to 10 degrees – quality beats quantity

From around 14 degrees, digestive performance drops noticeably. The fish continue to eat, but they eat less and are more selective. Anyone who now maintains the amount of food from phase 1 will saturate the place and lose bites.

Now a bait with a high attracting effect pays off per ball. The CBR Baits with Robin Red, GLM extract, liver and milk protein still releases clear signals even in cooler water. Reduce the amount to 0.5 to 1.5 kg and balance with liquid: a Bait attractor over the lining or a Select Liquid in the spod mix brings back the trace of scent that the cold water would otherwise slow down.

Phase 3: below 10 degrees – easy to digest and small

Below 10 degrees it is no longer the nutritional value that matters, but rather the digestibility. A heavy fishmeal bait is now literally in the carp's stomach. Carbohydrate and bird food base wins.

The Koki is built exactly for this situation: bird food, tiger nut flour, water-soluble peptides and a sweet flavor combination that even sluggish fish can absorb. The Golden nuggets Carbohydrate-based with roasted hemp flour and Scopex is the more selective option if you are targeting large fish.

Amount of food: a handful up to 500 g. In the cold, a small, precise space catches more than a large rug.

15 or 20 mm – the size question

With the same amount of food, at 15 mm there is around a quarter more individual bait available. More individual bait means more contact points and longer search time - a real advantage in cold water because the fish stays in place longer without getting full.

Bigger only makes sense if bream, catfish or crabs clear the space before the carp arrives. Then 20 mm or a hard, long standing bait is the answer.

The hookbait makes the difference

In autumn it is rarely enough to pull a boilie from the food onto your hair. Three variants that reliably bring more bites:

  • Wafter in the same variety as the food - balanced, is hardly rejected if taken carefully.
  • Pop up over leaves and weeds - in autumn there is a soft layer at the bottom of many bodies of water that makes bottom bait disappear.
  • Hookbait plus Dip or gel – the fastest way to concentrate the attraction exactly where the hook is.

Briefly summarized

  • 18-14 °C: fishmeal and crustaceans, lots of food
  • 14–10 °C: high attractant density, half the amount, add liquid
  • below 10 °C: bird food and carbohydrates, small portions, 15 mm
  • Always present hook baits balanced or buoyant
